Best VGC
Teams 2026
Regulation I (2026) allows up to 2 Restricted Legendaries — the most open format in VGC history. These are the top team archetypes dominating the current meta, with full member lists, strategy breakdowns, and matchup analysis.
What Makes a Team "Best"?
"Best team" isn't just theoretical power — it must produce consistent results in real tournament conditions. We evaluate archetypes across three criteria.
Day 2 conversion rate, Top 8 at Regional and International Championships. A single Top Cut run may be luck — top archetypes show consistent results across multiple players.
The team must handle the most common meta threats (Calyrex-Shadow, Kyogre, Incineroar cores) without needing hyper-specific counter-leads.
Multiple viable leads, multiple win conditions. The best teams never rely on a single combo sequence — they can pivot based on opponent teamsheets.
Top Regulation I Team Archetypes
Calyrex-Shadow + Incineroar Core
Amoonguss's Rage Powder and Spore protect Calyrex-Shadow's setup turns, while Gholdengo's Good as Gold ignores all redirection and status — it can freely launch Make It Rain even when Amoonguss redirects. Flutter Mane's Icy Wind drops opposing Speed, widening Calyrex-Shadow's natural speed advantage.
- +Spread pressure nearly impossible to wall with a single defensive pivot
- +Spore + Rage Powder makes Calyrex-Shadow extremely hard to focus-fire
- +Gholdengo hard-counters Amoonguss-based support strategies
- −Extremely vulnerable to Dark-type moves (Knock Off, Sucker Punch)
- −Relies on Amoonguss surviving early to function
- −Fast opposing Ghost-type spread can mirror-match
Koraidon Sun Offense
Koraidon's Orichalcum Pulse auto-sets Sun, which doubles Flutter Mane's Booster Energy Speed and boosts Flare Blitz damage. Tornadus Tailwind extends the speed advantage over three turns, letting Koraidon and Flutter Mane sweep before the opponent can set counter-weather.
- +Multiple members benefit from Sun simultaneously
- +Tailwind + Orichalcum Pulse creates overwhelming speed pressure
- +Flare Blitz's 100% burn on contact chip damages physical attackers
- −Heavily weather-dependent — Kyogre or Miraidon can flip the weather
- −Vulnerable to spread Water-type moves
- −Tailwind sets up over turns that can be disrupted by Taunt or Fake Out
Kyogre Rain
Origin Pulse under Rain hits 150 effective BP spread — nearly nothing survives a direct hit without solid Water resist. Calyrex-Shadow cleans up whatever survives Origin Pulse, and Amoonguss redirection keeps Kyogre safe from being focus-fired off the field before it fires.
- +Origin Pulse Rain spread is one of the highest-damage opening plays in the format
- +Weather control neutralizes Sun teams entirely
- +Amoonguss provides consistent redirection protection
- −Rain can be overridden by Groudon Drought or Koraidon Orichalcum Pulse
- −Grass-type spread (Pollen Puff, Grassy Glide) hits both Kyogre and Amoonguss super-effectively
- −Icy Wind speed drops reduce Kyogre momentum quickly
Zacian-Groudon Balance
Groudon's Drought sets Sun, boosting Fire-type damage and weakening Rain. Zacian-Crowned leads with Behemoth Blade for enormous physical damage, while Rillaboom's Grassy Terrain both heals the team and grants Grassy Glide priority — useful for revenge-KOing threats that survived Zacian's attacks.
- +Zacian-Crowned's 148 effective base Attack is one of the highest in the format
- +Grassy Terrain + Grassy Glide priority output is difficult to play around
- +Groudon Sun weakens Rain and adds Rock coverage spread
- −Zacian weak to Water, Ground, and Fire — Groudon patches Ground and Fire
- −Over-reliance on Sun makes it vulnerable to Rain counter-weather
- −Amoonguss Spore accuracy drops in Sun (Drought affects Sleep Powder accuracy)
Terapagos Balance
Terapagos enters Terastal Form and fires Tera Starstorm as a spread Stellar-type move against both opponents simultaneously. Rillaboom's Grassy Terrain provides passive healing and enables Grassy Glide priority output. Grimmsnarl sets Prankster screens on turn 1, giving Terapagos the bulk to fire Tera Starstorm multiple turns safely.
- +Terapagos form shift provides tactical flexibility opponents must plan for
- +Grassy Terrain bulk healing dramatically extends team longevity
- +Grimmsnarl screens under Prankster beat fast offensive pressure
- −Lacks the raw burst power of weather-based teams
- −Screens countered by Taunt from fast leads
- −Vulnerable to Ghost-type spread moves (Astral Barrage) that hit Terapagos super-effectively
How to Pick Your Team
The best team depends on your playstyle and how well you understand the meta you're entering. Use this decision flowchart to narrow down.
Tip: If you're new to Regulation I, start with the Calyrex-Shadow + Incineroar core. It has the most community resources, the most recorded tournament games, and the clearest decision trees in common matchups.
FAQ
The most dominant VGC 2026 team archetype is Calyrex-Shadow + Incineroar core — typically paired with Flutter Mane, Amoonguss, Gholdengo, and Iron Hands or Rillaboom. Kyogre Rain and Koraidon Sun are equally strong tier-1 options depending on playstyle.
Calyrex-Shadow is among the top restricted Pokémon in Regulation I. Its Astral Barrage spread power and Ghost/Psychic typing make it extremely difficult to handle. However, Kyogre's Origin Pulse and Koraidon's Flare Blitz can put pressure on it in specific scenarios.
Top support Pokémon in VGC 2026: Incineroar (Fake Out + Intimidate + Parting Shot loop), Amoonguss (Spore + Rage Powder redirection), Gholdengo (Good as Gold immune to all status moves), and Grimmsnarl (Prankster screens). Incineroar appears on virtually every top-placing team.
Counter Trick Room with: 1) Taunt to prevent setup. 2) Rillaboom Grassy Glide — a priority move that still outspeeds in normal turn order outside Trick Room. 3) Flutter Mane Icy Wind to drop opposing Speed before they set TR. 4) Slower spread attackers that flip the speed advantage inside Trick Room.
Usage Rate & Meta Data
Calyrex-Shadow leads Regulation I with 35.2% usage, while Incineroar appears on 48% of all top teams regardless of archetype — making it the single most versatile support core in the format.
Key Damage Calculations
Astral Barrage threatens 71–85% per hit on the premier support Pokémon, forcing opponents to burn Fake Out or pivot on turn 1 or concede board control immediately.
Rain-boosted Origin Pulse guarantees an OHKO on the most common speed-control pivot in the format, establishing Kyogre Rain as the highest opening burst-damage archetype in Reg I.
Behemoth Blade deals 80–94% to the most common redirection support, meaning a single Behemoth Blade plus any follow-up spread clears the opponent's entire redirect layer in two actions.
