Xerneas
Best Partners 2026

One Geomancy. +2 SpAtk, +2 SpDef, +2 Speed. Everything that isn't Steel or Poison gets OHKOed. The right partners guarantee the Geomancy goes through — here's every one of them, explained fully.

The Geomancy Setup Problem

Xerneas's Core Vulnerability

Geomancy takes one full turn to charge (unless Xerneas holds Power Herb). During that turn, opponents will try to: ①Fake Out to flinch Xerneas and cancel the charge; ②Taunt to block non-attacking moves entirely; ③simply KO Xerneas before it finishes. Partners must prevent all three threats simultaneously.

What Xerneas Needs from Partners

Fake Out Support

Flinches one opponent during the Geomancy turn, blocking the opponent's own Fake Out from reaching Xerneas. Incineroar and Smeargle are the primary carriers.

Redirection Support

Follow Me (Togekiss, Clefairy) or Rage Powder (Amoonguss) draws all attacks away from Xerneas so it charges Geomancy with zero damage taken.

Anti-Taunt Coverage

Grimmsnarl or Murkrow's Prankster Taunt preemptively blocks the opponent's Taunt before it reaches Xerneas, keeping Geomancy usable.

Poison & Steel Coverage

Post-Geomancy Xerneas cannot hit Steel or Poison types. Partners must provide Fire or Ground coverage to remove these threats from the field.

IncineroarFireDark
Fake Out + Intimidate Defense Chain
Full Guide →

The primary guardian for the Geomancy turn. Fake Out flinches one opponent for the full turn while Xerneas sets up completely undisturbed. Intimidate drops physical Attack, making it far harder to KO Xerneas during the charge. After Geomancy lands, Parting Shot pivots Incineroar back in and re-triggers Intimidate, perpetually capping the opponent's physical damage ceiling. Found on nearly every top Xerneas team.

Follow Me Redirection + Double Fairy Pressure
Full Guide →

Follow Me draws all single-target attacks to Togekiss, leaving Xerneas completely untouched during Geomancy. Serene Grace under Fairy Aura makes Air Slash a 60% flinch threat — and Xerneas's Fairy Aura also boosts Togekiss's own Moonblast by 1.3×. After Geomancy, Xerneas + Togekiss form a dual Fairy pressure core that almost nothing not named Steel or Poison can survive.

Rage Powder Full Redirection + Spore Speed Control

Rage Powder redirects all attacks from both opponents to Amoonguss, making the Geomancy turn completely risk-free. Spore puts one threat to sleep on the same turn, neutralizing a second. Combined with Incineroar, Fake Out flinches one target and Rage Powder absorbs the other — Geomancy goes through at 100%. Grass typing also lets Xerneas freely use Earthquake spread without hitting Amoonguss.

Strong situational picks based on the meta you expect

PokémonTypeKey Synergy
ClefairyNormalFollow Me redirects like Togekiss, but Friend Guard passively reduces all damage dealt to Xerneas by 25% during the Geomancy turn — significantly improving survival odds. Normal typing also makes it immune to Normal spread. Excellent at tanking hits that slip through Fake Out.
SmeargleNormalVia Sketch, Smeargle can carry any two moves. Standard set: Fake Out + Spore. Fake Out flinches one opponent, Spore sleeps the other — both threats neutralized in one turn while Xerneas uses Geomancy. Extremely fragile; needs positioning to avoid being KO'd before it acts.
MurkrowDarkFlyingPrankster Tailwind doubles Speed for the whole team as a priority action — post-Geomancy Xerneas hits 198 Speed, under Tailwind that becomes 396, outspeeding everything. Priority Taunt preemptively blocks opponents's own Taunt before it reaches Xerneas. Haze erases any opponent boost that threatens to out-stat Geomancy Xerneas.
GrimmsnarlFairyDarkPrankster Light Screen / Reflect go up as priority moves, massively raising Xerneas's durability during the Geomancy setup turn. After Geomancy completes, Helping Hand amplifies Xerneas's already-massive Moonblast for one-shot scenarios on targets that might otherwise survive.

Second Restricted Partner Options

Xerneas uses one Restricted slot. The second Restricted determines the team's primary offensive angle and weakness coverage strategy.

Calyrex-Shadow

After Xerneas uses Geomancy, Calyrex-Shadow sweeps with Astral Barrage spread — the classic "setup then sweep" division of labor between the two Restricteds.

Terapagos

Xerneas Fairy Aura pressure pairs with Terapagos spread damage, creating a dual-Restricted core that overwhelms most defensive answers.

Kyogre

Rain softens Xerneas's Fire weakness while Kyogre adds Restricted-tier water pressure. Requires careful coverage planning for Poison and Steel types.

Flutter Mane replaces Amoonguss for deeper special Fairy output. Smeargle's Fake Out + Spore covers the Rage Powder role aggressively. Best for players who prefer proactive disruption over passive tanking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best partner for Xerneas in VGC 2026?

Incineroar is the best partner for Xerneas. Fake Out flinches one opponent on the Geomancy turn, Intimidate softens physical hits during setup, and Parting Shot lets Intimidate cycle repeatedly throughout the game. Nearly every top Xerneas team runs Incineroar.

How do I protect Xerneas while it uses Geomancy?

Three main methods: ①Fake Out (Incineroar) flinches one opponent for the whole turn; ②Redirection (Togekiss Follow Me, Amoonguss Rage Powder) draws all attacks away from Xerneas; ③Prankster priority Taunt preemptively blocks opponents' Taunt. Stacking these (e.g., Fake Out + Rage Powder) makes Geomancy near-100% safe.

Why is Incineroar the best Xerneas partner?

Incineroar provides everything Xerneas needs in one slot: Fake Out secures the Geomancy turn; Intimidate continuously caps physical damage; Parting Shot cycles Intimidate back; Fire + Dark typing covers Poison and Steel — both of Xerneas's weaknesses. No other partner offers this breadth of support.

Can Xerneas sweep without Geomancy?

Rarely. With base 99 Speed, Xerneas gets outsped by most offensive Restricted Pokémon without a boost. Un-boosted Xerneas can function under Trick Room or as a Moonblast spread threat under Fairy Aura, but the threat level drops dramatically. Most teams run Power Herb specifically to make Geomancy instant.

Key Damage Calculations

Lv50 · Standard Format
Post-Geomancy Moonblast vs 0 HP Koraidon
+2 252 SpA Fairy Aura Xerneas Moonblast vs 0 HP / 0 SpD Koraidon: OHKO

Post-Geomancy Moonblast under Fairy Aura OHKOs even 0 HP Koraidon, demonstrating that +2 Fairy STAB clears the most threatening Restricted Pokémon in the format.

Post-Geomancy Dazzling Gleam Spread vs Two Targets
+2 252 SpA Fairy Aura Xerneas Dazzling Gleam vs both targets: massive spread pressure

Dazzling Gleam hits both opposing Pokémon simultaneously. Post-Geomancy under Fairy Aura, the spread damage is sufficient to simultaneously KO virtually any non-Steel/Poison pairing the opponent brings.

Turn 1: Incineroar Fake Out + Xerneas Geomancy
Incineroar Fake Out → flinch (non-Inner Focus target) | Xerneas Geomancy → 100% success

Incineroar's Fake Out flinches one non-Inner Focus opponent for the full turn, guaranteeing Xerneas completes Geomancy with 100% success on that target. This is the defining turn-1 sequence the entire team is built around.
