Clefairy
VGC Guide
Speed 35. HP 70. But Friend Guard makes your Restricted take 25% less damage from everything — including spread moves. No other Pokémon does this.
Why Low-BST Clefairy Dominates Doubles
Clefairy's base stats look unimpressive at first glance: HP 70, Def 48, Sp.Def 65, Speed 35. But those numbers are largely irrelevant, because Clefairy's real value comes from somewhere else entirely.
Friend Guard is Clefairy's core selling point — and the entire reason to use Clefairy instead of Clefable in Regulation I. This ability reduces all damage taken by adjacent allies by 25%. In doubles, every attack hitting your restricted legendary (Groudon, Miraidon, etc.) is reduced by a quarter, including spread moves like Earthquake and Rock Slide.
Eviolite solves Clefairy's bulk problem. The item gives unevolved Pokémon a ×1.5 boost to both Defense and Special Defense, making Clefairy's effective bulk far exceed what its base stats suggest.
Combined with Follow Me (redirects single-target moves) and Helping Hand (powers up a partner's next move), Clefairy offers a support toolkit that is nearly irreplaceable in doubles formats.
Friend Guard: The Mechanic That Makes Clefairy Viable
Friend Guard multiplies all damage taken by adjacent allies by 0.75 (a 25% reduction). This is a multiplicative modifier that stacks with other defensive boosts:
- →Intimidate + Friend Guard: Opponent's Attack drops by one stage (×0.67), then Friend Guard applies (×0.75) — your partner takes roughly 50% less physical damage combined
- →Spread moves: Earthquake, Rock Slide, and other spread moves hitting the partner are all reduced by 25% by Friend Guard
- →Coverage: Applies to all direct damage moves, contact and non-contact; does not apply to residual damage (weather, burn, etc.)
This is why Incineroar + Clefairy is a top-tier combination — layered together, the restricted partner can take physical hits that would otherwise threaten a KO, buying critical setup turns.
Follow Me: Protecting Your Restricted Attacker
Follow Me is one of the most important support moves in VGC doubles. When used, all single-target moves aimed at your side that turn — including moves the opponent directs at your partner — are redirected to Clefairy instead.
This allows your restricted legendary to safely use a charging move, set up a weather or terrain, or simply attack without fear of being targeted. The opponent must use spread moves like Earthquake to hit both Pokémon simultaneously.
Follow Me combined with Eviolite bulk means Clefairy can absorb quite a few single-target hits. Even if Clefairy goes down, your restricted attacker has typically secured one or two free action turns — and in VGC, those turns often decide games.
Eviolite: Why Clefairy Is Bulkier Than It Looks
Eviolite applies a ×1.5 multiplier to both Defense and Sp.Def (Lv50 Bold 252 Def EV calculation). Effective Defense reaches approximately 105 and Sp.Def approximately 97 — enough to absorb most non-crit single-target hits and allow multiple Follow Me activations throughout a game.
Eviolite only works on unevolved Pokémon. Clefable (Clefairy's evolution) cannot hold Eviolite — this is the core reason to use Clefairy over Clefable in VGC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Friend Guard reduces all damage taken by adjacent allies by 25%. This applies to direct attacks and spread moves but not residual effects like weather or burn damage. It is one of the only abilities in VGC that passively reduces damage your partner takes each turn, making it uniquely valuable for protecting restricted legendaries.
Clefairy is the only Pokémon that simultaneously has Friend Guard (25% partner damage reduction), Follow Me (redirect single-target moves), and Eviolite (boosts both Def and Sp.Def by 1.5×). Togekiss has no Friend Guard. Indeedee-F sets Psychic Surge (blocking priority moves on ground) but also lacks Friend Guard. If your team needs the maximum possible partner protection, Clefairy is the only option.
The standard set is Follow Me / Helping Hand / Moonblast / Protect with Eviolite, Bold nature, 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Sp.Def. An alternative runs Follow Me / Encore / Moonblast / Protect with Calm nature and 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Sp.Def for special bulk priority.
Yes. Eviolite raises both Defense and Special Defense of any unevolved Pokémon by 1.5×. On a Bold Lv50 Clefairy with 252 Defense EVs, Eviolite pushes effective Defense to roughly 105 and Sp.Def to roughly 97 — comparable to fully evolved bulky Pokémon. Eviolite is mandatory on Clefairy; without it, Clefairy cannot absorb enough hits to use Follow Me multiple times in a game.
Usage Rate & Meta Data
Clefairy appeared in 6.2% of Regulation I teams. With Eviolite its effective bulk (95 HP / 127.5 Def / 97.5 Sp.Def) far exceeds its raw base stats, and Friend Guard provides a steady 25% damage reduction on every hit targeting its adjacent ally.
Key Damage Calculations
Friend Guard keeps Astral Barrage damage on Calyrex-Ice within survivable range, buying the ice rider a free action turn rather than being threatened by a two-hit KO.
Without Friend Guard, the same Astral Barrage enters two-hit KO range, making Calyrex-Ice unsafe to set up. This directly illustrates how the 25% reduction changes viability at the highest level of play.
Follow Me redirects Precipice Blades onto Clefairy, which tanks the hit with Eviolite while the restricted partner takes zero damage — creating an uncontested offensive turn for your legendary.
