GARCHOMP VGC GUIDE — POKÉMON CHAMPIONS

Dragon / Ground~30% Usage50.5% Win RateRough Skin 98.5%

Garchomp is the highest-usage Pokémon in Pokémon Champions Regulation M-B at roughly 30%. Dragon/Ground dual-typing provides exceptional offensive coverage in a format where most ultra-fast Legendary and Paradox threats are banned, 102 base Speed is highly competitive in the flattened speed tier, and Rough Skin passively chips contact attackers — making it one of the most reliable physical cores in the format.

Why Garchomp Leads Regulation M-B

Dragon/Ground Coverage · Rough Skin · Speed Tier
Type Coverage

Dragon/Ground provides exceptional coverage. Earthquake is super-effective on Fire, Electric, and Steel; Dragon Claw handles opposing Dragons; Rock Slide covers Flying and Ice gaps. With Legendaries and Paradox banned, this typing combination faces very few effective resists in the current meta.

Rough Skin

Rough Skin drains 1/8 max HP from every contact-move user, effectively punishing Incineroar's Fake Out and similar physical contact moves without spending a turn. Rocky Helmet upgrades this to 1/6 HP lost per contact hit — a substantial passive deterrent.

Speed Tier

102 base Speed is highly competitive in Regulation M-B's flattened speed tier after ultra-fast Legendary and Paradox threats are banned. Under Tailwind from Whimsicott, effective Speed reaches 204 — outspeeding virtually every threat in the format.

Critical Note: The Speed Cost of Mega Evolution

Mega Evolution drops Speed from 102 to 92, allowing Pokémon in the 93–101 Speed range to outspeed Mega Garchomp when they previously couldn't. Without an active sandstorm, Sand Force provides zero benefit, leaving Mega Garchomp with only +40 Atk/SpA over base at the cost of a worse Speed tier. Unless your team is purpose-built around sand, Life Orb standard Garchomp is the stronger pick.

Alternate Move Options

Scale Shot is a Dragon Claw alternative — 60 power hitting 2–5 times (averaging ~3) with +1 Speed and −1 Defense on the last hit, creating speed-breaking potential. However, inconsistent hit counts make Dragon Claw's reliability preferred at top level. Stomping Tantrum replaces Earthquake when running a Levitate partner; it also gains 150 base power if the previous move was blocked or missed, making it a punishing situational option.

SP Training Spreads

Champions SP System (66 Total, 32 Max Per Stat)
Offensive Speed (Standard Garchomp)
Standard
32 Atk / 32 Spd / 2 HP
Nature: Jolly (+Spd / −SpA)Item: Life Orb

The most common build. 32 Speed maximizes Garchomp's base-102 Speed tier; 32 Attack with Life Orb maximizes damage output; 2 HP provides marginal extra bulk. Optimal base for Whimsicott Tailwind team cores in Regulation M-B.

Bulky Speed (Standard Garchomp)
Bulky
32 HP / 18 Atk / 1 Def / 1 SpD / 12 Spd
Nature: Adamant (+Atk / −SpA)Item: Sitrus Berry

Trades peak Speed for significantly more bulk. 32 HP plus Sitrus Berry recovery gives reliable longevity; 12 Speed is still fast enough under Tailwind; Adamant compensates for lower Attack SP investment. Best for speed-control teams or when Garchomp needs to survive spread hits.

Mega Garchomp Offensive (Sand Team)
Mega
32 Atk / 20 HP / 12 Spd / 2 SpD
Nature: Adamant (+Atk / −SpA)Item: Garchompite

Speed drops to 92 after Mega Evolution; 12 Speed SP maintains priority over targets in the 80–91 range. 32 Attack maximizes Sand Force-boosted damage output; 20 HP provides the bulk needed to survive key priority hits in sand while still threatening most offensive targets.

Team Partners

Fake Out Support · Spread Synergy · Speed Control
Incineroar
Fake Out + Intimidate Support

Incineroar is Garchomp's premier support partner. Fake Out flinches an opponent on turn one, giving Garchomp a free Earthquake or Dragon Claw. Intimidate drops opposing Attack, directly reducing incoming damage to Garchomp. Fake Out is a contact move targeting opponents — it does not trigger friendly Rough Skin.

Whimsicott
Prankster Tailwind Setup

Whimsicott's Prankster Tailwind is Garchomp's strongest speed multiplier, providing a 204 effective Speed under Tailwind — outspeeding virtually all threats in the format. Encore locking opponents into a support move creates guaranteed free turns for Garchomp. Together, the pair achieves a 51.6% win rate in Regulation M-B.

Charizard
Weather Control + Flying Coverage

Mega Charizard Y's Drought sets sun and creates a physical/special dual attacker core with Garchomp. Crucially, Charizard is Flying-type and immune to Earthquake — making spread EQ safer to use freely. The Garchomp + Charizard combination achieves a 54.6% win rate in Regulation M-B data.

Kingambit
Dark/Steel Physical Partner

Kingambit's Supreme Overlord gains compounding Attack boosts as teammates faint, combining with Garchomp's Dragon/Ground coverage into a dual physical core with complementary typings. Critical note: Earthquake hits Kingambit since it is not Ground-immune — prioritize Dragon Claw or Rock Slide when Kingambit is your battle partner, or run Stomping Tantrum. Combined win rate: 54.4%.

Basculegion
Ghost/Water Special Attacker

Basculegion is a high-usage partner in Regulation M-B, forming a physical/special dual attacker core with Garchomp. Ghost-type immunity to Normal and Fighting fills defensive gaps Garchomp can't cover. The pairing achieves a 52.7% win rate. Note: Earthquake still hits Basculegion — position carefully or use Stomping Tantrum.

Mega Tyranitar
Sand Stream (Mega Garchomp teams only)

Mega Tyranitar's Sand Stream auto-sets sandstorm, activating Mega Garchomp's Sand Force ×1.3 boost on Ground/Rock/Steel moves. Their Rock/Dark + Dragon/Ground coverage creates a broad offensive core. Remember: only one Mega Evolution per battle — if Mega Tyranitar is your Mega slot, Garchomp stays in base form.

Counters & Checks

Ice 4× · Fairy 2× · Dragon 2×
Ice Weakness
Fairy Weakness
Dragon Weakness
Ninetales-AlolaIce / Fairy
High Threat

Ice/Fairy dual typing hits both of Garchomp's primary weaknesses (4× Ice, 2× Fairy) in one Pokémon. Snow weather boosts Special Defense for allies, Blizzard achieves near-certain accuracy in snow, and Moonblast threatens for 2×. One of the premier dedicated Garchomp counters in Regulation M-B.

FroslassIce / Ghost
High Threat

Froslass' Ice-type moves 4× Garchomp, and its Speed tier threatens to outspeed Garchomp outside of Tailwind. Data shows Froslass achieves a 47.4% win rate specifically against Garchomp — one of its strongest individual counters. Ghost-typing also dodges Normal-type coverage Garchomp occasionally runs.

Lycanroc-DuskRock
High Threat (data)

Meta data shows Lycanroc-Dusk achieves a 43.9% win rate against Garchomp — one of the most consistent individual matchup advantages in the format. Priority Accelerock threatens Garchomp even under Tailwind conditions, and its strong physical Attack makes each Rock-type hit meaningful.

DragapultDragon / Ghost
Moderate-High Threat

Dragapult's 142 base Speed far exceeds Garchomp's 102, comfortably outspeeding it without Tailwind. Ghost and Dragon STAB both threaten Garchomp (Dragon hits for 2×). Garchomp can respond with Dragon Claw, but needs Tailwind or Choice Scarf support to guarantee moving first against Dragapult.

Fairy-types (Togekiss, Sylveon, etc.)Fairy
Moderate Threat

All Fairy-types are immune to Garchomp's Dragon Claw and Scale Shot, completely nullifying its Dragon STAB, while Moonblast and other Fairy moves hit for 2×. Togekiss Follow Me redirects Earthquake away from the team, shutting down Garchomp's spread offense entirely. Running a Fairy-type redirector is one of the strongest anti-Garchomp team strategies available.

Key Damage Calculations

Representative Damage Calcs (Lv.50 Doubles)
Jolly Garchomp (32 Atk / 32 Spd, Life Orb)
Earthquake (spread, 75 power in doubles)
vs 0 Def Incineroar
Approx. 65–80% (2HKO, not OHKO)

Doubles Earthquake takes a 0.75× spread penalty (100 → 75 effective power), then Life Orb applies ×1.3, bringing effective power to ~97.5. Incineroar has no Ground resistance. The result highlights why base Garchomp needs two Earthquakes or partner assistance to KO standard Incineroar — reinforcing the importance of Fake Out + Intimidate support in the matchup.

Jolly Garchomp (32 Atk / 32 Spd, Life Orb)
Dragon Claw (single target, 80 power, Dragon STAB)
vs 0 Def Dragapult
Approx. 90–115% (near-OHKO to OHKO)

Dragon Claw receives Dragon STAB (×1.5) compounded with Life Orb (×1.3), dealing near-OHKO or clean OHKO damage on low-Defense Dragapult. While Dragapult outspeeds Garchomp (142 vs 102 base), it cannot safely absorb a STAB Dragon Claw. Under Tailwind, Garchomp moves first and can cleanly eliminate the Dragon check — a critical role in many team compositions.

Adamant Mega Garchomp (32 Atk, Sand Force active in sandstorm)
Earthquake (spread, 75 power, Sand Force ×1.3)
vs 0 Def Incineroar
Approx. 110–135% (OHKO)

Mega Garchomp's 170 Attack (vs base 130) combined with Sand Force ×1.3 on Ground moves in active sandstorm dramatically elevates spread Earthquake's effective damage. Compare to base Garchomp's ~65–80% on Incineroar — Mega in sand cleanly OHKOs the same target. This calculation illustrates exactly why sand teams are purpose-built around Mega Garchomp. Consistent sandstorm support from a teammate is required to achieve this output.
