Speed Control Team Guide

Tailwind Team
Complete Guide

Tailwind is VGC’s most universally applicable speed-control tool — 4 turns of doubled team Speed benefits virtually any team archetype. This guide covers setter selection, 4-turn momentum management strategy, and complete solutions for countering Trick Room and other speed-reversal threats.

Own Side
Affects own team only

Tailwind doubles all allied Pokémon’s Speed for 4 turns (including the setup turn, so effectively 3 offensive turns). Speed returns to normal immediately when Tailwind expires. Under Tailwind, even naturally slower Pokémon outspeed most opponents — which is exactly why Tailwind and Trick Room are fundamentally opposed.

4 Ways to Beat Tailwind Teams

Trick Room Speed Reversal

Trick Room completely reverses Speed order — Tailwind’s speed advantage vanishes and becomes a disadvantage, as faster Tailwind attackers move LAST under TR. Cresselia or Porygon2’s Trick Room is the strongest counter to Tailwind teams.

Priority Taunt

Tornadus’s Prankster Tailwind has +1 priority, but faster Prankster Taunt (Grimmsnarl) activates first and blocks Tailwind setup. Dark-types also negate Prankster entirely.

T1 KO Before Tailwind Enables

On the Tailwind setup turn, Tornadus typically can only set Tailwind. Focus fire on the primary attacker T1 — if you KO it, Tailwind becomes useless.

Tank Through Tailwind Window

After 4 turns, Tailwind expires and Speed normalizes. Bulky Pokémon (Assault Vest Amoonguss, etc.) can survive the Tailwind window and counter-attack afterward.

Tailwind FAQ

How much speed does Tailwind increase?

Tailwind multiplies your team's Speed by ×2 for 4 turns (including the setup turn). A Pokémon with 135 base Speed like Koraidon goes from 194 Speed at Lv.50 to 388 under Tailwind — outspeeding virtually everything in the game.

Does Tailwind stack with Choice Scarf or other Speed boosts?

Tailwind's ×2 multiplier is calculated separately from Choice Scarf and Speed-boosting natures — they stack multiplicatively. However, Choice Scarf on a Tailwind attacker wastes the Tailwind benefit; attackers under Tailwind typically run damage items or bulk-boosting sets instead.

How long does Tailwind last in VGC doubles?

Tailwind lasts exactly 4 turns in VGC doubles, including the setup turn — giving you 3 full offensive turns. Speed returns to normal immediately at the end of turn 4, so momentum management and prioritizing KOs within the window is critical.

Does Armor Tail block Prankster Tailwind?

Yes. Armor Tail (Iron Crown's ability) blocks all moves that gain priority through the Prankster ability — including Prankster Tailwind, Prankster Encore, Prankster Taunt, and Prankster Thunder Wave. Once Prankster grants a move +1 priority, Armor Tail treats it as a priority move and fully negates it. Armor Tail does NOT block inherently priority moves like Extreme Speed, Fake Out, or Quick Attack. Iron Crown counters virtually all Prankster-based support strategies.

Which Pokémon are best at setting Tailwind in VGC?

S-tier: Tornadus (Prankster Tailwind has +1 priority — sets before any standard-speed move). A-tier: Talonflame (Gale Wings at full HP gives Tailwind priority without Prankster). B-tier: Grimmsnarl (Prankster Tailwind with utility support, but lower offensive threat). Tornadus is the most common in competitive play.
