Dual Ability Mechanics Explained

Tera Shell (Normal Form)

While Terapagos is at full HP, all damaging moves are treated as not very effective (×0.5).

  • • Super-effective moves only deal 0.5× damage at full HP
  • • Fixed-damage moves (Dragon Rage, Night Shade) are unaffected
  • • Once HP drops below max, Tera Shell deactivates — Terastallize before this happens
  • • Sitrus Berry or Protect help maintain full HP for the Tera window
Teraform Zero (Terastal Form)

The moment Terapagos Terastallizes, it permanently clears all weather and terrain on the field (until the opponent resets them).

  • • Clears all weather: Sun, Rain, Sand, Snow and all associated move boosts
  • • Clears all terrain: Electric, Psychic, Grassy, and Misty Terrain
  • • Stronger than Air Lock: weather/terrain does not return when Terapagos leaves the field
  • • Terastallization can only be used once per battle
Strategic note: Tera Shell provides entry survival insurance, letting you hold the Terastallize window until the optimal moment. Teraform Zero is a one-time reset that dismantles the opponent's entire weather or terrain strategy. Together they make Terapagos the strongest terrain/weather counter restricted legendary in the format.

EV Spread Breakdown

Max HP / Sp.Atk (Standard)
Recommended
252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA · Quiet

Maximizes Terastal bulk and Tera Starstorm output. With 160 HP and Quiet nature, Earth Power OHKOs many non-Steel targets that expect a defensive Terapagos.

Max HP / Def (Body Press)
Advanced
252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA · Relaxed

Maximizes Body Press damage (calculated from Defense). Relaxed nature minimizes Speed for Trick Room priority; 110 Defense + max EVs gives Body Press damage rivaling top Fighting moves.

Balanced
Situational
252 HP / 100 Def / 156 SpA · Quiet

Keeps strong Body Press damage while maintaining meaningful Sp.Atk for Tera Starstorm. Best when you need to threaten multiple damage types in the same game.

Team Synergy

Terapagos team building centers on ensuring it enters the field at full HP. Tera Shell is entirely HP-dependent, so Fake Out support, priority moves, or pivot switching are essential to bring it in safely.

The Terastallize timing is the key decision: Teraform Zero permanently removes all weather and terrain, so if the opponent's strategy is built around those systems, the Terastal transformation can swing the entire game in one turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Terapagos Tera Shell ability work?

Tera Shell makes all damaging moves deal not-very-effective damage (×0.5) against Terapagos while it is at full HP, regardless of type matchup. No move can deal neutral or super-effective damage at full HP — making it the hardest restricted legendary to OHKO on entry.

What is the difference between Teraform Zero and Air Lock?

The key difference is permanence. Rayquaza's Air Lock only suppresses weather while on field — weather resumes when it switches out. Terapagos's Teraform Zero permanently removes all weather and terrain at the moment of Terastallization (until the opponent resets it), making it far more thorough against terrain-based teams.

What tier is Terapagos in VGC 2026?

Terapagos is generally rated A or B tier among restricted legendaries in Regulation I. Tera Shell provides unique entry survival insurance, and Teraform Zero is uniquely effective against terrain and weather teams. However, 85 base Speed is modest and it needs team support to reliably enter at full HP.
