VGC Perish Song
Strategy Guide
Perish Song triggers a 3-turn KO countdown on every Pokémon currently on the field. The only counter is switching out. Combined with Encore to block switching or Shadow Tag trapping, Perish Song bypasses all HP investment and defensive EVs — a guaranteed KO regardless of bulk.
Perish Song Mechanics: The 3-Turn Countdown
Perish Song applies a 3-turn countdown to every Pokémon on the field, including the user. When the counter reaches 0, the Pokémon immediately faints regardless of remaining HP. The only defense is switching out — the counter stops for any Pokémon that leaves the field.
In doubles, Perish Song simultaneously affects both opponents. If neither can switch out (locked by Encore or trapping), both opponents faint in 3 turns. This makes Perish Song a devastating endgame tool, especially when opponents have only 1–2 Pokémon remaining.
Trapping Opponents: Making Perish Song 100% Lethal
Encore (Prankster Whimsicott)
Prankster Encore has +1 priority — activates before opponent can switch out. Locks them into their last used move, preventing Baton Pass, U-turn, or Volt Switch
Endgame 1v2 / Last Pokémon
When the opponent has only one Pokémon remaining, switching out is no longer possible — Perish Song becomes a guaranteed 3-turn KO. Most effective when played in the final stages of a close match
Shadow Tag (Gothitelle — limited)
Shadow Tag traps opponents completely (no switching). Combined with Perish Song, creates an unescapable countdown. Very niche in Regulation I but extremely powerful when it appears
Best Perish Song Users in Regulation I
High HP (130 base) provides ample countdown buffer; survives 3 turns with Protect/switching management
Pairs naturally with rain teams; defensive EV investment sustains through the 3-turn countdown
Ghost typing allows switching out to escape its own Perish Song countdown — the safest setup user that does not faint from its own move
