Sp.Def100
Speed70

Politoed's stat distribution clearly favors a support role: HP 90 and Sp.Def 100 provide enough special bulk to survive long enough to maintain rain uptime. Speed 70 is middling without Icy Wind support. Attack 75 is effectively irrelevant. The core value is the ability — Drizzle reshapes the entire battle environment the instant Politoed switches in.

Duration: Rain lasts 5 turns without an item, or 8 turns with a Damp Rock. Every time Politoed switches back in, the timer resets — meaning active pivoting in doubles can keep Rain up almost indefinitely.

Key limitation: Politoed summons standard Rain, which can be overridden by an opponent's Drought (Sunny Day / Drought ability), Sand Stream, or Snow Warning. This differs from Kyogre's Primordial Sea (Heavy Rain), which cannot be overridden by any means.

Rain Team Ecosystem

Politoed's value is entirely dependent on the partners it supports. Here are the key Pokémon that benefit from Rain in Regulation I:

Kyogre
WaterRestricted

Brings its own Primordial Sea — doesn't need Politoed. But when paired together both share the same rain field. Origin Pulse in Heavy Rain is one of the most powerful attacks in the game. Uses your Restricted slot.

Barraskewda
Water

Swift Swim doubles Speed in rain, reaching approximately 220 — among the fastest non-Restricted Pokémon in the game. Jet Punch deals crushing priority damage.

Ludicolo
Water/Grass

Swift Swim doubles Speed. Grass coverage hits the Water-type weaknesses of Electric and Grass types that threaten rain teams.

Kingdra
Water/Dragon

Swift Swim doubles Speed. In rain, Kingdra's dual weaknesses (Dragon/Fairy) are less exploitable — Dragon coverage is relatively rare in competitive play.

Araquanid
Water/Bug

Water Bubble doubles Water move power, stacking with rain: ×1.5 (Bubble) × ×1.5 (Rain) = ×2.25 total multiplier. Water-type attacks deal over double normal damage.

Pelipper
Water/Flying

Hurricane goes 100% accurate in rain. Provides Tailwind speed control and U-turn pivot. Also a rain setter — see comparison section below.

Politoed vs Pelipper: Rain Setter Comparison

Politoed Advantages
  • +
    Pure Water typing
No Flying weakness — not double-weak to Electric spread moves
  • +
    Higher Sp.Def (100)
Much bulkier specially than Pelipper (65), survives more special hits
  • +
    Hypnosis option
Can replace a move slot with Hypnosis for disruption
  • +
    Fewer weaknesses
Only Grass ×2 and Electric ×2 — just 2 weaknesses total
Pelipper Advantages
  • +
    Hurricane (100% in Rain)
Flying spread damage hits Grass and Fighting types threatening rain
  • +
    Tailwind
Doubles team Speed for 2 turns — Politoed has no equivalent
  • +
    U-turn
Safe pivot to bring in teammates while maintaining offensive momentum
  • +
    Ground immunity
Immune to Ground moves, making Earthquake less effective for opponents
Verdict Pelipper sees slightly higher usage in Regulation I primarily for Tailwind and Hurricane output. Politoed is the better fit when you need greater special bulk, Hypnosis disruption, or when your team already has Speed control covered (Icy Wind). Both are viable — the choice depends on the rest of your team composition.

Counters & Checks

Threat
Grass ×2
Example
Pollen Puff, Energy Ball spread
Response
Pivot to a partner that resists Grass; Politoed has enough bulk to survive one hit and switch
Threat
Electric ×2
Example
Thunder (100% in Rain)
Response
Rain's most dangerous irony — your own weather makes Thunder perfectly accurate against Politoed. Keep Electric-resistant partners ready
Threat
Opposing weather setters
Example
Drought (Torkoal), Sand Stream (Tyranitar)
Response
Politoed counters by switching back in to reset rain. Against double weather teams, prioritize Politoed switch-in timing
Threat
Kyogre (opponent)
Example
Primordial Sea overwrites Politoed's rain
Response
Kyogre's Heavy Rain supersedes Politoed's weather. Mirror matches require careful positioning around when Kyogre and Politoed are both on the field

FAQ

What is the difference between Politoed and Pelipper for Rain teams?
Politoed: pure Water type (no Flying weakness), Sp.Def 100 is significantly higher, has Hypnosis option. Pelipper: Hurricane is 100% accurate in Rain, Tailwind doubles team Speed for 2 turns, U-turn is a safe pivot move. Pelipper sees slightly higher usage in Regulation I, but Politoed offers better bulk and fewer exploitable weaknesses.
How does Drizzle work in VGC?
Drizzle summons Rain automatically when Politoed enters — no move slot required. Rain lasts 5 turns (8 with Damp Rock). Effects: Water moves ×1.5 power, Fire ×0.5, Thunder and Hurricane 100% accurate, Swift Swim doubles Speed. Timer resets every time Politoed switches back in.
Is Politoed or Kyogre better for Rain?
In Regulation I, Kyogre's Primordial Sea can't be overridden and Origin Pulse in Heavy Rain is among the most powerful attacks in the game — but Kyogre uses your Restricted legendary slot. Politoed summons standard Rain (overrideable) but frees your Restricted slot for another legendary. The right answer depends on your overall team structure.
What is Politoed's best moveset for VGC?
Standard support set: Scald / Icy Wind / Helping Hand / Protect with Damp Rock, Calm nature, 252 HP / 252 Sp.Def / 4 Sp.Atk. Icy Wind provides spread -1 Speed to both opponents. Helping Hand amplifies a partner's attack by 50%. Damp Rock extends Rain to 8 turns.

Key Damage Calculations

Lv50 · Standard Format
Kyogre Origin Pulse in Rain
252+ SpA Kyogre Origin Pulse vs 252 HP / 4 SpD Landorus-T (Rain): 177-210 (90.3 - 107.1%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Rain's ×1.5 multiplier pushes Kyogre's Origin Pulse into OHKO range on targets it would otherwise survive, demonstrating exactly why keeping Politoed's rain active is a top priority each turn.

Barraskewda Liquidation after Swift Swim
252 Atk Barraskewda Liquidation vs 252 HP / 0 Def Rillaboom (Rain): 140-166 (67.6 - 80.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Swift Swim elevates Barraskewda's Speed to roughly 220 in rain, ensuring it moves first; the ×1.5 rain Water multiplier means Liquidation reliably 2HKOs most non-specially-bulky targets after a single rain turn.

Politoed Surviving a Key Hit (Defensive Utility)
252 SpA Raichu Thunder vs 252 HP / 252+ SpD Politoed (Rain): 126-150 (64.6 - 76.9%) -- guaranteed survival

The irony: rain makes Thunder 100% accurate against Politoed itself, yet 252 HP / 252 SpDef investment lets it survive a full-EV Thunder and continue setting weather next turn — the central design argument for maximum special bulk on support sets.
