Sableye
VGC Guide
50 base everything. But Prankster turns status moves into priority. Taunt an opponent's Trick Room setter, Fake Out their lead, Quash their best attacker — all before they can move. Sableye's stats are irrelevant when nothing gets to act before it.
Prankster: Priority Status Moves Explained
Prankster gives Sableye's non-damaging status moves +1 priority. In doubles, this means Fake Out, Taunt, Quash, Will-O-Wisp, and Disable all fire before almost every other move — including the opponent's own Fake Out. Key exception: Dark-type Pokémon are completely immune to all Prankster-boosted moves (Generation 6+ rule).
- • Fake Out — +1 priority, flinches before opponent Fake Out
- • Taunt — priority lock on all status moves
- • Quash — forces target to act last this turn
- • Will-O-Wisp — priority burn halves physical attack
- • Disable — priority lock on opponent's last used move
- • Dark-types immune to ALL Prankster moves
- • Grimmsnarl, Hydreigon, Sableye itself all immune
- • Cannot Taunt/Quash/Will-O-Wisp a Dark-type at all
- • Fairy-types deal ×2 damage to Sableye
- • Only weakness is Fairy; immune to Normal + Fighting
Sableye's Dark/Ghost typing is remarkably clean defensively: only one weakness (Fairy ×2), immune to Normal and Fighting entirely. Opponent Fake Out (Normal-type) never affects Sableye, guaranteeing it can freely execute its Prankster combo. Note: Sableye's Prankster moves are status moves, not Ghost-type — they still hit Normal-type Pokémon. Only Dark-types are immune.
Key Moves Breakdown
Prankster Fake Out outruns opposing Fake Out unless the opponent also has Prankster. Flinches the opponent's lead, giving your partner a free turn for a setup move or high-damage attack. Note: Normal-type moves can't hit Ghost-types, but opponent Fake Out also can't hit Sableye — its Ghost typing provides mutual immunity.
Prankster Taunt is the most impactful tool in the set. It hits Trick Room setters (Cresselia, Porygon2), Tailwind setters (Whimsicott, Tornadus), and Spore users (Amoonguss) before they can act. Once Taunted, the target cannot use any non-damaging move for 3 turns — completely dismantling setup-based strategies.
Quash forces the target to act last on the current turn. With Prankster, this fires before opponents can respond — forcing the opposing team's restricted legendary or offensive powerhouse to move after everyone else. Pairs well with a fast partner who can KO the now-delayed target before it gets to act.
Priority burn cuts the target's physical Attack by 50% for the rest of the match. Highly effective against physical attackers like Incineroar, Iron Hands, and restricted legendaries with high Attack. Works especially well on bulky Sableye sets that need longevity to keep applying Prankster pressure.
Priority locks the move the opponent used on the previous turn for 4 turns. Excellent for disabling Protect after an opponent uses it, or locking out a Choice-locked Pokémon's key move. Prankster ensures Disable lands before the opponent can pivot or use a different move.
Best Movesets
Swaps Quash for Will-O-Wisp to specifically target physical attack–heavy compositions. Priority burn + Disable creates a lock-and-damage package: burn halves the attacker's damage output, while Disable prevents them from using their coverage or key move. Rocky Helmet punishes contact moves while Sableye's Ghost typing makes opponent Fake Out irrelevant.
Matchup Analysis
Prankster Taunt is the single best tool against Trick Room. Taunt reaches Cresselia, Porygon2, and Stakataka before they can set Trick Room. Combined with Fake Out on the second opponent, Sableye can neutralize both opposing Pokémon on turn 1 before the Trick Room strategy gets off the ground.
Priority Taunt shuts down Whimsicott, Tornadus, and Incineroar before they can use Tailwind. Once the setter is Taunted, the opponent loses their speed advantage completely, letting your team dictate pace for the next 4 turns.
Priority Taunt blocks Amoonguss Spore before it lands. However, Amoonguss pairs with Rage Powder to redirect away from Sableye, and Gholdengo (immune to Taunt via Good as Gold) often partners with Amoonguss. Matchup requires careful targeting decisions.
Against teams that don't rely on status moves, Sableye's toolkit loses most of its value. Fake Out still provides one turn of disruption and Will-O-Wisp can neuter physical attackers, but Sableye contributes far less against straightforward damage-only compositions.
Dark-types are completely immune to all Prankster moves. If the opponent's core uses Dark-types (Hydreigon, Grimmsnarl, Ting-Lu), Sableye is completely unable to Taunt, Quash, or Will-O-Wisp them. Team partners must handle Dark-type threats independently.

FAQ
Prankster gives all of Sableye's status (non-damaging) moves +1 priority. Fake Out, Taunt, Quash, Will-O-Wisp, and Disable all execute before nearly every other move. The most impactful use: Prankster Taunt reaches Trick Room and Tailwind setters before they can use their setup move. Dark-type Pokémon (Gen 6+) are immune to all Prankster-boosted moves.
Sableye's base stats (50/75/75/65/65/50) are entirely support-tier. Its value comes from Prankster: Fake Out flinches before the opponent can act, Prankster Taunt dismantles Trick Room and Tailwind setups before they happen, and Quash forces the fastest opposing threat to move last. These all fire before opponents can respond, making Sableye one of the most efficient field-control supports against setup teams.
Standard Sableye runs Fake Out / Taunt / Quash / Protect with Sitrus Berry, Careful nature, 252 HP / 252 SpDef / 4 Def. A second set replaces Quash with Will-O-Wisp (priority burn vs physical attackers) and Rocky Helmet as the item. All moves fire with Prankster priority before most opponents can respond.
Prankster Taunt reaches Trick Room setters (Cresselia, Porygon2, Stakataka) before they can use Trick Room. Once Taunted, setters can't use any non-damaging move for 3 turns — completely preventing Trick Room setup. With Fake Out on the other opposing Pokémon, Sableye can freeze both opponents on turn 1 before the Trick Room strategy gets started.
Usage Rate & Meta Data
Sableye appears on 34% of Trick Room counter teams despite a 7.8% overall usage rate, reflecting how Prankster Taunt specifically targets the setup-dependent strategies that dominate the current meta.
Key Damage Calculations
As long as Sableye acts first within the Prankster priority bracket (opponent lacks Prankster), Taunt lands before the setter can use Trick Room — a 100% shutdown on that turn.
Prankster Fake Out has a 100% flinch rate against any non-Ghost target, completely denying that Pokémon their action for the turn. Sableye's own Ghost typing means opponent Fake Out never affects it.
Will-O-Wisp permanently halves the target's physical Attack stat and deals 1/16 max HP each turn. With Prankster priority, the burn lands before physical attackers can deal damage — immediately reducing their offensive threat.
